 School of Mathematics

The School of Mathematics offers a major in “Computer Assisted Mathematics Teaching”.  Its objective is to prepare high school teachers.  The School of Mathematics is in charge of all math courses taught to all the students of this university.

As part of the School’s compromise with the Costa Rican society, it develops research and extension projects to train the teachers that work for the Ministry of Public Education and thus help improve education.

Furthermore, the School of Mathematics develops other research and extension projects aided by the Research and Educational Software Development Centre (CIDSE) and by the virtual magazine.

Academic School Director: Dr. Luis Gerardo Meza Cascante

 On-line courses:

These projects support the teaching-learning process of mathematics through the use of Internet technologies, thus adding a more dynamic methodology in learning and teaching mathematics.  The following courses are currently working with these technologies:
Courses
Mathematics placement test
Tutorials

 Agreements:

The School of Mathematics has established strategic alliances with different universities, the Ministry of Public Education, and some institutions or companies that are interested in the development of educational software.  The most important links are the following:

MEP-PROMECE:  this agreement fostered a project to train high school teachers on the use of The Geometer SketchPad (Geometra) and HTML.

Wolfram Research Inc: with this agreement it has been possible to use the programs Mathematica and WebMathematica, which are very useful in mathematics education and research.

Key Curriculum Press:  this agreement helped in using the program The Geometer SketchPad (Geometra), in the different courses that the School offers and in some training courses.

UNAM:  This alliance fostered the establishment of an editorial staff for the virtual magazine.
