The School of Material Sciences and Engineering’s mission is to contribute to the integral development of the country through the formation of human resource, investigation and extension to keep a scientific, technological and technical leadership. It looks for the academic excellence and strictly follows ethical, human, and environmental rules from the perspective of a quality and competitive state university to a national and international level.

The School has qualified personnel and a variety of laboratories to offer services for the industrial and governmental activities such as:
  • Technical assistance
  • Laboratory services

  • Research and Development.

Description of the Services:

  • Spectometry and Diffractometry of X rays.
  1. Spectometry: Quantitative chemical analysis of ferrous alloys.
    • Iron foundry.
    • Carbon steel and low alloys.
    • Tool degree steels.
  2. Diffractometry: Qualitative chemical analysis of:
  • Special and non-ferrous alloys.
  • Minerals and raw materials.
  • Corrosion products
  • In general, crystalline materials.

Non- Destructive Control Laboratory:
Structures, pipes and products inspection through the following techniques:

  • Penetrating liquids.
  • Ultrasound (defect and thickness measurement)
  • Visual inspection.
  • Industrial X – Ray.
  • Parasitic currents.
  • Magnetic particles.
  • Industrial diagnostics.

Smelting and Molding Laboratory:

  • Sand casting analysis service.
  • Goods production services.
  • Fusion of non-ferrous alloys (aluminium base, cooper and some others)
  • Fusion of ferrous alloys (iron and steel casting)
  • Development and Research of products directed to the import substitution.
  • Non-conventional casting process implementation.

Laboratory of Corrosion and Material Protection:

  • Corrosion velocity studies.
  • Material parkerizing studies.
  • Metallic and non-metallic coating analysis.
  • Measurement of coating thicknesses.
  • Studies of corrosion in structures, products and reinforced concrete.
  • Coat bonding.

Metallographic Laboratory:

  • Analysis of metal structure.
  • Identification of material.
  • Identification of received thermal treatment.
  • Analysis of hardness and microhardness.
  • Photographic documentation of structures.
  • Stereoscopic microscopy.
  • Measurement of metallic coating thickness through metallographic means.

Mineral Processing Laboratory and Extractive Metallurgy:
Preliminary studies are done to verify the viability of mineral recovery over auriferous types.

  • Triturating and milling.
  • Gravimetric concentration.
  • Flotation.
  • Hydrometallurgy.
  • Plant auxiliary processes (sedimentation, flocculation, etc)

Laboratories of Thermal Treatment:

  1. Conventional services of thermal treatments:
    • Conventional quenching.
    • Drawing.
    • Annealing.
    • Salts quenching.
  1. Services of Termochemical Treatment:
    • Cementation.
    • Salts nitridation (Tenifer Process)
    • Salts drawing.

Other services:

  • Failure analysis in mechanical pieces.
  • Kiln design for thermal and smelting treatments.

Training and Updating:
This School offers courses in topics such as: thermal treatments, material corrosion and protection, metallic material selection, raw material quality control and metallic products, smelting, extractive metallurgy, etc.
