 Characteristics of Materials Engineering

Materials engineering is a modern specialization that is ´poured´ into the career.

Its action field includes the scientific knowledge of materials such as metal, plastic, ceramics, glass, compounds and the way to process them, the application and its conventional ways, ass well as the high technology area.

Functions that play a role in Materials Engineering

The materials engineer can collaborate in any productive sector where they work with industrial materials, for example:

•  Ventures that process high-technology materials
•  Businesses dedicated to the manufacture of metal products.
•  Companies that apply metallic and non-metallic liming onto components and structures
•  Investigation and development center for new materials
•  Laboratories for destructive and non-destructive material tests.
•  Investigation centers for corrosion and protection of materials
•  Companies that extract and transform minerals.
• Industries for energy generation and processing of hydrocarbon
•  Industries that fabricate cement, glass and compound materials.
•  Industries that process plastics, ceramics and fireproof materials
•  Companies that are dedicated to the protection of the environment through the recycling of materials

Resources and facilities of the career

The career of Materials Engineering, which pertain to the School of  Materials Sciences and Engineering , counts with professionals and engineers who are specialized in the different areas of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering. Furthermore, it holds laboratories and modern equipment to study materials. This permits the students an integral education, with a practical vision, that guaranties professionals with a solid education and great knowledge of the national productive sector.

Laboratories

•  Laboratory of non-destructive experiment (END)
•  Laboratory with chemical and corrosion chamber
•  Laboratory of metal-graphic analyze
•  Laboratory for thermal treatment
•  Laboratory of mineral treatment and metallurgy extraction
•  Laboratory for detection of metal percentage by spectrographic analyses
•  X-Ray diffraction laboratory

To finish, it has to be pointed out that the career for Materials Engineering of the Costa Rican Institute of Technology, is unique in Central America and maintains narrow relationships with the national industry. This provides an easier incorporation of the graduates in the working world.
