In 1994, this School opened the Career in Computer Engineering as the first academic option in communication and information technologies in San Carlos. It just started with an Associate’s degree, but in 1998 it gave students the opportunity to complete their Bachelor academic degree.

The School of Computer Engineering in San Carlos is dedicated to the integral formation and competitiveness of high quality human resource. It also carries out investigations and develops computing activities to collaborate with the improvement of life conditions. Moreover, these aspects are based on ethical rules, searching also for technological innovations in harmony with nature.

This career has the participation of specialized professionals in the field who participate in publications, investigation and extension projects, as well as in software project development coordination for the national and international community. Besides that, it has a technological transference platform in coordination with FAO.

As part of the existing compromise of the career regarding information and communication technologies with this region, it is aided by the Japan Embassy and counts on the UNDP Regional Information Systems sponsorship. The idea is to develop productive and gobernability capacities in the Upala, Guatuso, Los Chiles, Sarapiquí and San Carlos cantons.

 Services


Microcomputers Institutional Laboratory
This lab possesses two rooms with 15 computers each. One of these rooms has permanent Internet access with Linux operative system.

The other room has two Windows and Linux operative systems to help students with their tasks. Furthermore, there are offered free courses, training for teachers, and laboratory practices given by teachers of the campus.

It has an office for technical support (60 hours a week) to install and repair software. Moreover, this service is provided by assistant students.

On the other hand, scanning, CD burning, document printing and equipment loan for presentations are also provided.

This Lab opens Monday to Friday (from 7:00am to 11:00pm) and on Saturdays (from 7:00am to noon) where operator students give the service.

TICs Laboratory Classroom
The main objective of this lab is to offer a physical space for Computer Engineering students to develop TIC projects. The lab has a LAN and a WLAN net, Internet and the right equipment for students to install their computers in order to do their tasks. It is also promoting the development of an interdisciplinary project based on team work to support teaching, investigation and extension.

It has approximately 24 work stations and a filing cabinet for 12 people.

 

 Agreements


There is an agreement with the Costa Rican Institute of Technology, University of UNAN León, and the University of Alcalá de Henares.
