The mission of the School of Computer Engineering is to develop information technologies (IT) required by different sectors of the country through the formation of the best human resource, research and extension to contribute to the development of the Costa Rican society.

The School has created a solid reputation due to its excellence in teaching and investigation. Furthermore, it offers academic options in the Central and in the San Carlos campuses, and reckons on the Computer Investigation Center (CIC). 

Its purpose as entity consists of solving problems in the Central American and Caribbean regions through the execution of activities oriented to the generation, adaptation, incorporation and broadcasting of the information technology knowledge.

 Services


Technical Resources:
This Department possesses advanced computing and communication resources for Teaching and Research, as well as Internet access.

The Department offers consultancy and develops applied and basic investigation projects through the CIC. Moreover, some of these projects are interdisciplinary and count on the participation of teachers and advanced students.

The activities offered by the CIC are obtained through the following areas:
Advising and Technical Counselling.

Research and Solution Development that involve new computer technology.

Continuing Education in topics related to computer technology.

 

Advising and Technical Counselling:
This program has a constant relationship with the state and private sectors to attend computer science needs. It also takes into account the permanent theoretical – practical updating of the people involved in this area. Moreover, the counselling activities highlight the efficient transference of technology and knowledge considering the following areas:

  • Computer science function planning.
  • Computer science function administration.
  • Projects administration.
  • Engineering of information systems (methods, tools, and quality)
  • Audit of systems
  • Computer science strategic use.
  • Organization and design of educational computer science laboratories.
  • Evaluation and selection of computer science technology.
  • Data base design.
  • Networks design.
  • Non-conventional systems design (multimedia, systems based on knowledge, systems of managerial information, specific digital systems)
  • Software reengineering.
  • Computer science support to the reengineering process.
  • Development of human resource in computer science.

The CIC occasionally organizes and carries out project services of information systems.

 

Training:

The training programs in computer science look for the constant updating of its professionals. There are also offered courses and workshops directed to people from other areas who need to know about computer science technologies to improve their professional performance.


Moreover, professional updating programs are provided in the following areas: Information System Management, Telematics System Management, Data Base Design and Refinement, Multimedia and Hypermedia, Educational Computer Science, Nets and Communication, Software Project Administration, and Software Engineering.


The following courses and workshops are offered as well: Basic and Advanced Routers Programming, Bar Code Technology, C Language, Interfaces Design, Internet and its Services (use and administration), Object Orientation, etc.


This School has  training programs for Organizations prior to diagnostic needs: Supreme Electoral Tribunal (“Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones”), “Radiográfica Costarricense” (Internet service and broad band provider),  Agricultural Credit Bank of Cartago  (“Banco Crédito Agrícola de Cartago”), Nacional Bank of Costa Rica (“Banco Nacional de Costa Rica”), Nacional Insurance Institute (“Instituto Nacional de Seguros”), Agricultural Development Institute (“Instituto de Desarrollo Agrario”), etc.


There are also organized programs to solve shortages in the market, for example: Programming technician, Modern Technologies for the Computer Science System Development, Electronics and Telecommunications Basis.
